Chairman Smith retired from the 105th Congress
after more than three decades of public service. He was first elected to the
Oregon State House of Representatives in 1960. From 1969 to 1973, he served
as Speaker of the Republican -controlled House. In 1973, Bob Smith was
elected to the State Senate. Four years later, he was elected as the Senate
Republican Leader, a position he held until his election to Congress in
1982. As a member of the United States House of Representatives, Bob Smith
spent a total of seven terms, during which he served on both the House
Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Resources. While in
Congress, Smith served as Chairman of the House Republican Research
Committee’s Task Force on Agriculture, and as Co-Chairman of the
Congressional Beef Caucus. In addition, Bob Smith’s dedication to community
service has led him to positions of directorship on the First State Bank of
Oregon, Key Bank, the Farmers Insurance Exchange Board, and the Board of
Trustees of Willamette University
