Ambassador, Robert Pelletreau served as Assistant
Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs for the period 1994 to 1997.
Prior to that time, he served as US Ambassador to Egypt, Tunisia and
Bahrain. His other assignments in the Foreign Service inciuded Algeria,
Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, and Syria as well as senior positions
in the Department of State and Defense While in Tunisia, Amb Pelletreau
conducted the U.S Dialogue with the PLO As Ambassador to Egypt, he joined
the U.S delegation to the 1991 Madrid-Middle East Peace Conference, and as
Assistant Secretary he traveled frequently to the region as a member of
Secretary Christopher’s Middie East negotiating team. During this period, he
also played a key role in the development and implementation of US poiicies
toward North Africa, the Levant, Egypt and the Guif, including Iraq and
Iran. In 1997, Amb Pelletreau joined Afridi & Angeii, an internationai law
firm in Washington D.C, New York, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Islamabad
and a network of cooperating firms throughout the Middle East.
